Get Dressed with May’s - How We Express Our Style

This year has been an interesting one, that’s for sure. The pandemic has changed so much about our lives - Our houses, jobs, social life, and on the surface of it all, the way we dress. Don’t worry, we don’t judge the sweatpants you’ve worn every day this week, or the cozy crew neck you can’t take off. Duh, comfort is key these days. We want to urge you to dress the way that feels good to you. Whether that be comfort over anything, or some statement sparkly pants you put on with nowhere to go, the most important thing is feeling good in what you wear, and feeling strong in the way you wear it. Not having anywhere to go doesn’t mean you can’t rock a silk dress or a fur coat. If you feel confident in it, wear it!

The best thing about it? In light of our efforts to inspire you, we are doing a $150 Giftcard Giveaway contest for anyone who posts on Instagram with the hashtag #GetDressedwithMays! Until Nov. 20, if you put on an outfit that you just feel dang good in, post it on Insta and tag us (@MaysPlace_STL) with the hashtag #GetDressedwithMays and get a chance to win this sweet deal! Post on your story or on your grid, it counts either way.

Here at May’s, getting dressed in the morning is the best part of our day, and each and every one of us expresses our style in completely different ways. It’s important to us that our customers get inspired the same way that we are.

“I could hardly think of an outfit that’s more me. As a mother of a toddler and a vintage picker, my everyday choices skew toward function and comfort. I’ve always been the jeans and t-shirt type, though my clothing collection would make people think otherwise...

My t-shirt collection is probably considered a prized possession... mostly shirts from bands I love (music is a huge part of my life), or messages of peace or resistance. I also love a white tee and have several of those in varied states of wear. This one is hands down my favorite that I own. It’s barely there, covered in holes and it’s message speaks to my soul. I bought it on Instagram from Nick at @beardedmermaid in Minnesota. When I inquired about it, he gave me his “I don’t want to sell it price” and I gladly obliged because it was a need, not a want.

My journey with finding the perfect pair of Levi’s has been a long one. Lots of pairs come through the shop and I just kept trying them on and trading up until I found these. These few extra COVID pounds have actually helped me to fill them out a little better than I did before and honestly, I’m not mad about it.

Lately what makes me the most confident and in my power is taking the time to do my hair and make-up. Investing those 30 minutes makes a huge difference in the tone of my day.”

“I’m a big believer that what you wear affects how you feel, when I wear an outfit that I love and am really feelin myself, I feel unstoppable. My go-tos while getting dressed are definitely a paper thin shredded t-shirt, which is probably my favorite vintage item to collect, and anything with a fun pattern. I especially love pattern mixing and a whole lot of jewelry. I definitely do not feel like myself without a ring on every finger and my wrists stacked with silver and turquoise. My shoes are possibly the most important part of the outfit. I think a good shoe choice can totally transform any outfit. I’m a big fan of a cool sneaker or a good pair of boots. Wearing whatever feels good to you is the most important thing - If you love it, wear it!”

“Fashion is easily the number one way I express myself. When I am wearing a solid outfit, my confidence and motivation go up 100%. Usually this kinda outfit for me would be something with a color pop or funky pattern. I am a huge lover of patterned jackets and blazers, typically a geometric pattern of some kind (my fav is houndstooth), but I’ve been very into paisley print lately. As far as color goes, I am such a sucker for a bright red or yellow somewhere in my fit paired with neutral tones (typically black, white, or denim). I also love to give my look some color with a pair of statement earrings, a bold lip, or bright colored eyeliner. My makeup and jewelry make a big difference in the way I choose what I wear each day - I don’t do anything without some sort of dangly earrings. With that being said, I’d say the 80s is mainly the style of vintage I love to work with, and I always try to shop this look sustainably at thrift stores. May’s Place always gives me constant style inspo - I am always looking to take it up a notch thanks to this place!”

“I feel the most strong and powerful when I’m wearing my favorite things! If it’s not my favorite, I don’t keep it around. Everything I own is my favorite, so I have A LOT of choices when I’m getting ready! Comfort over everything is what I always say, but there’s a way to make comfortable look very effortlessly cool. Cool and effortless are the key words I have in mind when I dress every day!  It’s easy to feel unique when you’re wearing vintage all the time.”

“I’d say about 98% of my wardrobe is second hand at this point. My style tends to lean more boho/feminine with nods to the late 60s/70s, but really I wear whatever makes me feel good...and that changes constantly. My current mood is that I don’t have time for boring clothes, so printed pants, distressed tees and denim, and studded leather are in heavy rotation. I like to play with proportions and silhouettes, and am loving a high waist, wide leg pant with a flowy crop top at the moment.”

Where my clothes are from:

Vintage osh kosh overalls from my friend Olivia (rusty bolt). She thrifted them in Iowa, but weren’t her size - lucky me ☺️

90s top I found at goodwill

Swedish Hasbeens I’ve had for probably 8 years

Jewelry is all vintage or artisan made - a couple mays place rings, a few tiny bands from Mesa home. My custom name ring was a souvenir from a trip to Disney world when I was maybe 10, and the pot leaf necklace is a family heirloom. The gold midi ring was mine as an infant! I never take it off!
