How to Style Our Top Jewelry Picks at May’s Place

We’ve never stopped loving jewelry, and right now we have a motherload of accessories including a line of earrings (and keychains!) with local independent business Mind Flowers, a collaboration with Kennedy’s Cache vintage fine jewelry, and of course our own collection of silver, gold and turquoise from our vintage finds.

But sometimes, it’s not easy. What is one to do when they have a killer pair of funky vintage earrings, but have no idea how to wear them, or what to wear with them? Maybe you have one of our vintage scarves, another one of our go-to accessories, and want to style jewelry with it? We get it, and we are here to help. We’ve picked out some of our favorite pieces from the shop and broke down some styling tips for you so you don’t have to.

Our top jewelry picks at May’s Place

Mind Flowers

This flower-power inspired brand is the brainchild of Olivia Cupp, a local independent maker from St. Louis. Her mission is to embrace the colors and concepts of the 60s and 70s “with a strong understanding of building a bigger and better future for the world,” and she does just that with the dangling daisies and the bold femme vibe of her venus hoop earrings.

How to Style

Here at May’s, we are a big fan of a statement piece. When worn with confidence, it can be the first thing someone notices when you walk in the room. Mind Flowers makes it easy to turn heads with a bright and bold design. You can wear these statement items with a plain white tee and blue jeans to give a pop of color to your outfit, or you can wear it with lots of colors like this Pierre Cardin 70s mini dress. The best part about earrings like this is that you can keep it simple with the rest of your jewelry, if you choose to wear any more at all!

Turquoise and Silver

If vintage had one color and stone, it would be turquoise. It’s like the bread and butter of all things Western, and a staple for all of our outfits at May’s. Turquoise is said to be the master healer stone, connected to the energy of water. It was used on bows and firearms by Apache Indians because they believed it improved accuracy while hunting. The Aztecs used the stone for its protective power on swords and shields.  Pretty cool, right?

How to Style

The best metal to pair with a nice turquoise stone is some sterling silver. The silver and turquoise jewelry combo originated in the 1880s when a white trader asked a Native American to turn a silver coin into turquoise jewelry. It’s been a classic ever since. The thing about this combination is that it goes with everything. We like turquoise rings because you can stack them high, or wear a big one on its own. That eye catching blue hue will add a hint of interest to a otherwise subtle look, and certainly start a conversation or two.

Kennedy’s Cache Gold Charms

The gold charms from our collaborative collection with KC have to be some of our favorite pieces in the shop right now. Kelly Brown, the founder of Kennedy’s Cache, makes gold charms a special part of her brand. “I love vintage charms that make you feel any kind of emotion. They make the best gifts (to others OR yourself) and anything that is a great conversation piece,” she says. “I also like to find gold charms that are just FUN.  Life is too short to take everything serious, so if a gold unicorn around your neck makes you feel happy then you need a gold unicorn!”

How to Style

The gold charm has been around for centuries. Necklaces, bracelets, make great heirloom pieces. They speak to people's unique personality and that's why we love them. Kelly’s favorite way to style the charms is not on a necklace, but watches, which we think is cool.   “I love to style gold charms on antique watch chains,” she says. “The clip on the end makes it so versatile and you can hang multiple at a time and easily swap them around and change them out.  With so many different styles of watch chains available too it's a fun way to change the look of the charm.”

Costume Jewelry

Ah, yes. Gold. The end-all be-all of chic vintage accessories. Well, maybe not entirely, but it is certainly a truly timeless wear, no matter the occasion. At May’s, we have a selection of gold costume jewelry - Gold that isn’t exactly real gold, but it has the same style and feel of the real thing, just at a fraction of the price. We have vintage-style earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, all of which would fit a modern look.

How to Style

There is something to be said for a gold touch in every outfit. And gold hoops go with everything, we’re talking EVERYTHING. We recommend styling our gold costume jewelry with black and white to start (our ‘GIVE A DAMN’ tees would be perfect!) But really, gold goes with just about anything.

Bottom Line

Styling jewelry can be hard. We know that. Sometimes it takes time to figure out what works best for you and what you like to wear. Styling anything is all about what makes you feel your best.
