Vinyl Wednesday: Brewer & Shipley

Tarkio, 1970

Released in 1970 on Kama Sutra Records, Tarkio is the third album from midwest bred American folk rock duo, Brewer & Shipley. The album is named after a small town in Missouri that the duo played regularly on their circuit of college gigs. It features the bands biggest hit "One Toke Over The Line", which peaked at #10 on the Billboard charts, as well as a cameo from the one and only Jerry Garcia playing a steel guitar intro on "Oh Mommy". The duo is best known for their socially charged lyrics that reflected the sentiment of the youth movement of the late 60's & early 70's - especially surrounding the Vietnam War and finding personal and political freedom.

Was lucky enough to grab this one back in 1989 when VH1 showed it on their nightly "My Generation" show (which was hosted by Peter Noone). Back when VH1 was a good channel and showed all music all the time, and REAL music at that (MTV was already dead by this time).
